There was no bigger band in the late 1970's and 1980's than Journey. You couldn't sneeze without hearing their songs on the radio or seeing their music videos on MTV. Originally formed in 1973 (Neal Schon on lead guitar; Gregg Rolie on keyboards and lead vocals; Ross Valory on bass; George Tickner on rhythm guitar; Prairie Prince on drums) the San Francisco bay area the band went through a few incarnations before making its indelible impact on rock music in 1977.
Their first semi-hit "Wheel in the Sky," did moderately well but it wasn't until Steve Perry was hired as the new lead singer that same year things that began to quickly change. Steve Smith (drums) joined the band in 1978 but it wasn't until a year that the hits began rolling in. 1979's EVOLUTION gave the band their first Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 single, "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" and 1980's DEPARTURE reached No. 8 on the album charts and included the top-25 hit "Any Way You Want It".
Their groundbreaking release ESCAPE was released in 1981 to fan and critic accolades. This was the debut release for their new keyboard player Jonathan Cain, of the band The Babys. The album, which so far as gone nine times platinum, went to number one on the album charts that year, and included
three top-ten hits: "Who's Cryin' Now", "Don't Stop Believin'", and the unforgettable love song "Open Arms". Their follow-up album FRONTIERS continued their phenomenal success with the top 40 hits "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)", "Faithfully", "Send Her My Love", and "After the Fall".
Steve Perry's departure in 1987 (by quitting or being fired - depends on whom you ask) looked like the end of Journey's journey. But then again, this is rock'n'roll; anything is possible. A couple of reunions materialized but didn't last. Finally in 2007 Journey hired Filipino singer Arnel Pineda of the cover band The Zoo after Neal Schon saw him on YouTube singing covers of Journey songs. The current band http://slotoff.com/ (check out this site
) line up consists of Arnel Pineda - vocals / Neal Schon - lead guitar, vocals / Ross Valory - bass, vocals / Jonathan Cain - keyboards, rhythm guitar, vocals / Deen Castronovo - drums, percussion, vocals.
